Why do Master’s Studies

We started this month swinging.  Last month we had Dark Arts at Sidney And Berne Davis Art Center.  There I did live painting at the event. I wanted to get a jump start on my painting so I used the projector to get an outline. After the event I started to feel a little bummed out and I couldn’t quite figure out why.

One night I was thinking of what my next portrait was going to be.

Then I started thinking about the projector.  Digging it out.,  setting up the tripod, opening Photoshop.  I had analysis paralysis.  I opted instead to Brain Rot Tik Tok in bed.

Thoughts of shame and disappointment ran through my head.  About laying in bed.  About projecting the dead.  About how it takes me so long to block in shapes.  Will I ever find my prolif?  I tried to fall asleep.

After about an hour of beating myself up, tossing and turning.  Finally I asked myself,  “Ok, your sad face because you cannot paint fast.

“You are not prolific,”

“The Question is what are you going to do about it?”

A master’s study.

The thought hit my gut like a plate of Mom’s spaghetti. I got out of bed and opened up YouTube on the desk top.

There waiting for me was a documentary about Frank Frazetta.

Sold!  I have no problems looking at …. Anatomy all day.

I decided to do five.

But most of all they are the most effective learning tool.

All the tutorials and all the classes in the world do not compare to sitting down and emulating a Master.  Think of it like conversational learning while taking a language.  You learn so much more actually speaking Spanish than looking at an app.  That is the same when learning visual language.

When you do a Master’s Study you get to go on the same journey the Master took.  You study each stroke.  After a while you start to understand the technique.  Along the way you figure out
